Sunday, February 24, 2013. Hugh’s Room, Toronto.
This 25th Folk Alliance Conference (FAI) was 5 days of peace, love and music. It was like a 60’s Love in, Be-in, Gathering of the Tribes. Music/ marketing peers converge from all points to create new friendships for the years to come. Like Jazz Fest in New Orleans, party and music happen around the clock.
Toronto’s premier folk-club Hugh’s Room was the scene for the wrap-party. To open the Sunday night party, members of Gangstagrass led a jam for a ‘Bill-Monroe-meets-De-La-Soul’ kinda set. Who says you can’t combine hip-hop and country-bluegrass? New Country Rehab, and the Swedish all-sister band Baskary were featured. Here’s my shot of Baskary big sister Greta Bondesson. Her sisters in the band are Stella and Sunniva .
New Country Rehab is spearheaded by lead-singer and fiddle-virtuoso John Showman. Ben Whiteley (double bass), Roman Tome on drums and backing vocals and Champagne James Robertson on guitar (pictured at the top) complete the band that closed the show. Breaking-strings and blowing out their voices on stage didn’t stop these seasoned Toronto musicians from raising the roof over the packed house.
